out how to clean up after the storm. The Better Business Bureau in Western Michigan (BBB%u00ae) warns consumers to be cautious when hiring help.%u201cScammers and bad businesses prey on vulnerable situations by posing as community members on social media, and pressuring homeowners to make decisions before any research can be done,%u201d says Lisa Frohnapfel, President & CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Western Michigan. %u201cDo your homework before giving a company or individual your money and watch for red flags of scammers.\Unlicensed contractors often canvas neighborhoods and community social media pages after storms and offer repair service and snow removal deals that seem too good to be true. They may use high-pressure sales tactics and increase marketing online. Out-of-state contractors will even solicit on neighborhood pages, posing as local community members. Many times, homeowners pay for the work but it is never done. While it is not unusual for contractors from various construction-related industries to offer assistance in mitigating ice dams and winter storm repair, it is important to do your research and hire companies you can trust.BBB offers the following tips before hiring someone to help:%u2022 Do your homework. Visit BBB.org to research the company before you make a decision. Make sure any company you hire has working contact information; such as a local address and phone number.%u2022 Hire only licensed and insured contractors. Verify the contractor has a valid license to do the work. While tree removal companies do not require state licensing, roofers and other repair companies likely do need to be licensed. You can check on builders licensing with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at https://aca-prod.accela.com/LARA/Default.aspx. Remember, BBB checks every year to make sure all BBB Accredited Businesses have the necessary licenses.%u2022 Check your homeowners insurance. Verify with your home insurance company what kind of repairs are covered under your policy to better help guide you when choosing a home repair service.%u2022 Get multiple bids and seek referrals. Ask at least three companies for bids. The lowest-priced bid may not be the best. A contractor should be able to give you reference names and phone numbers of at least three clients with projects like yours.%u2022 Have patience. Expect that a contractor may not be able to provide immediate service, especially during an unexpected major snowfall. Many snow removal contractors are receiving a lot of calls and can't set up appointments for several days.%u2022 Get a written contract and read it. Make sure any verbal promises are included, as well as; the agreed upon price, specific work to be done and the start date and expected completion date. Obtain a signed copy of the final contract before work is started. %u2022 Never pay the full amount up front. Be wary of any contractor who demands full payment upfront. Contractors may require a down payment to cover materials, but full payment should not be due until the work is complete and you are satisfied. Pay by credit card, if possible, never with cash. When paying by check, make payments to the company, not an individual.Additional Information:%u2022 Find a snow removal service near you and roofing contractors near you on BBB.org. Apply the filter to your results if you want to see only BBB Accredited Businesses.%u2022 Report scams to BBB.org/ScamTracker.%u2022 Visit BBB's Winter Storm Resources page at https://www.bbb.org/all/natural-disasters/winter-storms for tips on before, during and after a storm.ABOUT BBB%u00ae: BBB in Western Michigan is a nonprofit, business-supported organization that sets and upholds high standards for fair and honest business behavior.
