Difficulty with throwing out items that we no longer use that could have use %u2018some day%u2019 starts the list, followed by items that have cherished memories associated. Then there%u2019s the shopper in some of us that explodes when deals abound, an auction, an estate sale, or even the day-after events, like Christmas. What about materials that have never left your home from children, relatives, or those items we collect when loosing a loved one... the memories or items that belong to someone else. All these, and more, add to the challenge. We all have a list. Personally, I get all excited when I can sort a drawer in my kitchen. I%u2019d like to transition that same joy to my basement. It seems like once I get done I need to start all over again; it%u2019s where everythig goes. Much of the stuff down there belongs to so many different people. The bigger question is, why is it at our house? To solve the problem, albeit slowly, I%u2019ve started gifting items to their owners every Christmas. You can clearly guess their reactions when they open one of those... For me, it%u2019s priceless; it%u2019s space regained. Section by section we move forward but why doesn%u2019t it go faster? Because I have to reminisce about some items until I can put in into one of many %u2018to go%u2019 boxes. Our boxes have a variety of titles written on them including: keep, return to owner, sell, gift, share, donate, wait, or toss. Use what might work for you. Here%u2019s one thing I have learned... If I don%u2019t act on my boxes promptly, items seems to sneak out of the box, especially the %u2018wait%u2019 box. Even if the donate box is not full it has to go out. Being intentional about what stays and goes does help with the transition of your treasures to new places. In all seriousness however, how can one get started tackling the areas in your home in 2025? I have found a very successful technique for getting everyone on board %u2013 rewards. I am a list maker and then put everything is a very logically ordered progression of activity. When a room, or maybe you might start with a drawer, is done then I add a glorious stamp of completion. That could simply mean a new photo, a new rug, or hopefully this year new family photos for the wall. In most cases, it%u2019s not elaborate; it%u2019s just an exclaimation point of conclusion. Besides, I get to check it off my list, which is nearly as satisfying. A variety of experts share these suggestions that may help you get started. Keep in mind that you do not have to do the entire house, the basement, or even a room in a weekend. Create a strategy for making your way through the areas that would benefit from decluttering and then organization. One challenge that I find creeping up in the discussion is the special attachment that we develop with an item. The question I would pose is, %u201cWhy?%u201d Does the object help add value to your life is some way? If so, put it out on display to share that with others. If that%u2019s not appropriate and a safe would be better then do that. But to leave those special items piled up in a box somewhere may not really be giving it the value that you thought you had for it. So here goes...1. When is the last time you used this item? If it%u2019s a special tool, then it may sit there for a long time between uses but it is still valuable. If it%u2019s a seasonal item, whether it%u2019s clothing or decorative, and you did not display it or wear it when the season came around again, then it%u2019s possibly time to let someone else get value out of it. Lastly, I want to address the hidden gem that you found while decluttering; that item you forgot you even had. Clearly, if you haven%u2019t missed it the item is probably not adding a lot of value to your life. If it is an item that you%u2019ve been searching for since you moved that might be a completely different situation.
