Make it measurable. This allows you to specify what goal-success looks like. For example, if you want to add more exercise, set the amount of time you want this to be such as 30 minutes a day, two times a week in January, three times a week in February, and your final goal of four times a week beginning in March. Keep track of your progress in a journal or online. I use Runkeeper for my movement.5. Be realistic. Set your goals according to your lifestyle and ability, such as above. Time and stamina are both things you can continue to add. By adding fitness time, you decrease the amount of time on the couch.6. Make a plan. So you know what you want to accomplish, but make sure you also determine the when, where, and why of your vision. That also includes strategies and tactics to help you to stay the course. In fact, build in a bit of flexibility to account for that day that may not go as planned to reduce later frustration. 7. Pare it down. Write it down. Recognize that you will accomplish different goals throughout the year. Which goal should come first? Which should be eliminated all together? Choosing wisely is an essential part of achieving sustained success. Be realistic %u2013 part two.8. Employ the buddy system. One of the top predictors of success involves social support, as much as 70%, compared to those going it alone. Camaraderie makes sticking to your resolution more fun. However, your accountability partner might instead be the person you communicate with rather than walk with on your journey. 9. Progress over perfection. While you may have planned out your success life may have different ideas. Getting distracted by the plans of others can be the steam needed to derail your success. But your planning can be the tool that allows you to adjust and stay on track, albeit a bit differently than originally planned. If you don%u2019t hit the mark every single day, be flexible, adjust, and replan. Turn your frustration into an adjustment opportunity rather than a reason to abandon all goals. Be realistic %u2013 part three.10. Stay positive. It can be difficult to add changes to your life. Intentionally believe in your goal and try to constantly remind yourself of the benefits and the impact it will have on your life. Focusing on the positives will help you stick to your plan and make it happen.List your reasons why these added changes are important to you and how your life may change for the better when you succeed.During the first days of a new resolution you will probably feel confident and highly motivated. You haven't really faced any discomfort or temptation associated with changing your behavior, making this change might seem all too easy. However, challenges will likely come. Encountering a setback is one of the most common reasons why people give up on their New Year's resolutions. Don't view a relapse as a failure. The path toward your goal is not always a straight one; identify struggles as learning opportunities to restart and continue on your journey towards your goal. When you face such moments, remind yourself exactly why you are doing this. Think about (or write a list to keep handy) what do you have to gain by achieving your goal. Finding sources of inspiration can keep you going when times get tough.Post reminders in places you will look at regularly such as bathroom mirrors or on your desk or laptop. Use your phone to create events and reminders. Add to your to-do lists. Write your plan and progress, including successes, challenges, and coping mechanisms, in a journal.Change is a process. Learn and adapt. Remember that unhealthy or undesired habits probably took years to develop. Developing new habits will also take time, generally more than a matter of days, weeks, or possibly months. Be patient with yourself. It may take longer than you would like to achieve your goals nestled within your priorities, but remember that this is not a race to the finish. Once you have made the commitment to new priorities, your changing behaviors may be something that you gloriously continue to work on and enjoy for the rest of your life.As I reflect back on 2024 the one thing I am thankful for is family and friends. We%u2019ve lost some, gained some, and still treasured them all the same. They help give my world meaning. And as I go into 2025 I must say that I want more time together, more hugs, more stories to share, more memories to hold dear, with tons of photos to smile at. All of these things enrich my life. Everything else, while important, becomes the mechanics of how I live out the rest of my life in a healthy, purposeful, and daily learning way. I do enjoy the positive enthusiasm that others bring to the New Year. As you evaluate your list this year, remember to prioritize your focus on what%u2019s truly important to you so that you too may experience a life that is full. Happy New Year!
