At the time it felt like an epiphany but it has been a successful journey all the way from January 2024 to today. How can that be, you may wonder?I have changed my focus from resolutions to priorities that matter most in my life. As a result, I can share with you that I have been able to support at least one priority every single day. Here%u2019s the great part%u2026 success breeds more success. The New Year marks the perfect time to make changes and brings with it hope for something new and better or possibly a desire to go back to the way things used to be. Within my focus on priorities I still examine those items I may have previously called resolutions, just in a different way. I focus on what I can add to my day rather than what I must take away from my daily activities. I no longer want to fall into the trap of zealous resolutions that last no longer than March. Setting priorities against which to measure each successful day is similar to setting goals but it changes the focus to all of the people I want to spend more time with, or activities that I want to have take up priority time in my life. While I am not a counselor, I have been around the sun many times and know that a plan is always better than a wish, or a hope, when looking at changes. So I have set priorities. More than that, I have intentional actions to add that will help me with each priority. Even when life throws curveballs and the tyranny of the urgent demands attention, my priorities remain intact. In fact, my priorities are the very thing that help to support me through what may have presented as a challenging event. The same can hold true for you.Once I set my priorities, I identified all the items or steps I needed to add to get there. Sometimes it%u2019s more of a time shift. Here%u2019s where the similarity to resolutions come into play. Whether you set priorities, goals, or resolutions an important step is to write down what you value, what you will focus on, and how you will get there. Also be willing to grant yourself some grace; life happens and time requirements of the moment may need to pivot in order sustain well-being, mental health, and the complexities of life. Some of you may be fully satisfied right where you are. It%u2019s amazing how wisdom can help us to define the life we want over the years. What about you? Are you ready for changes? For those that may want a bit of fine-tuning then consider that success is more likely when you create a plan and can also enlist an accountability partner. And the good news is that when all the distractions come along, the plan can help to move distractions aside, not get derailed, and allow you to keep the focus on what matters most. There are actions, when done consistently, that can help you. The interesting thing is that you may have read these before. But maybe now, however, you are ready to truly change a lifestyle behavior in order to develop new habits and these ideas are just what you need to read. Once habits become ingrained, the new identity is formed. Wishing you a successful journey in 2025. 1. Flip the script. Change the way you look at a goal. Rather than focusing on eliminating a behavior try to focus on starting a behavior. Research indicates that it is easier to start a behavior than to stop one. As an example, if you want to eat healthier, a focus on mindful eating might be to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables rather than to focus on eliminating drivethrough windows.2. Start with small, realistic, %u2018livable%u2019 goals. Don%u2019t let your ambition lead you to unattainable levels. Start an activity slowly and consistently so that your body gets used to it, and build from there. 3. Break it down. Choose one goal at a time. Achieving even one small goal can boost your belief in yourself. Break larger goals into manageable chunks to work on one at a time. The American Psychological Association (APA) also suggests focusing on just one behavior at a time is more likely to lead to long-term success.RESOLUTIONS FROM PRIORITIES %u2013 A NEW WAY TO CREATE SUCCESSBy: Sherii Sherban, Publisher
