Dr. James Gysel, Special to Senior TimesMATTERS FaithLIVING AND GIVINGSpring is finally here after a hard winter and a very rainy March and April! One of the ways I can really tell it%u2019s spring is because my neighbors (and my wife and I) are out and about in the yard (doing some spring cleanup). We connect with our neighbors as we walk (they%u2019re out of the house now too), surveying how the world is breaking forth in brilliant color and noticing most everyone out walking, running, biking, and moving to get the blood pumping for an exciting new season ahead.Awhile back I was reflecting on things that matter most during my devotional reading, and I ran across a quote from a wise person who said, %u201cGiving needs not be confined to money or material gifts, but I would like more people to give their hands to serve and their hearts to love %u2013 to recognize the poor in their own homes, towns, and countries, and to reach out to them in love and compassion.%u201dThose are the words of Mother Teresa, one of the true saints to have %u201cwalked the talk%u201d with ever fiber of her being %u2013 giving her very life for the poor and dying of Calcutta, India. A true role mode for all who believe in that which you cannot see with your eyes, but you know is true in your heart.Another wise man (Jesus) had some important things to say about the poor (you will always have them) and about the opportunity they give us to respond to the needs that present themselves to us in this world. In fact He said that if you want to truly find yourself and be at peace with your own soul%u2026 give yourself away.%u201cFor those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.%u201d ~ Matthew 10:39 & 16:25This is the irony of faithfulness: It%u2019s about believing that which you cannot see or prove, but you know from the depths of your heart that it%u2019s true! And then acting on that faith is what it means to be truly alive. I know that I%u2019m most alive when I give myself away. For me there is a deep joy and peace that comes from giving. It%u2019s a kind of fulfillment of the nudge I%u2019m getting from the Spirit to do something. Giving your time, your treasure, your prayers, and your life for another person is when your purpose for being alive will rise to the top and become clear. And honestly, it%u2019s a great way to live out your days.Go ahead and give in whatever way the Spirit directs you this spring, and know that you%u2019re on the right track. Keep it up. Don%u2019t give up. What you%u2019re doing really matters in the big picture of creation. It's truly a way to bring heaven on earth even as the Creator making spring blossom around us on this miracle we call earth.~ Faithfully yours, Jim GyselOver-the-CounterHearing Aids Scam By: Michigan Attorney General Dana NesselDuring Better Hearing and Speech Month, Michigan Attorney General issued this urgent consumer alert to warn consumers to beware of companies selling cheap and phony hearing devices.Dozens of companies have entered the over-the-counter hearing aid market since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) relaxed restrictions on the sales of hearing aids in 2017. Many of the products sold by these companies are actually Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAP), not FDA-approved medical devices.Sellers of these phony products often entice consumers via websites advertising deals for much less than what a traditional FDA-approved hearing aid would cost. According to a bulletin issued by the FDA, these companies often market their products as being \imply FDA approval, but a registered product is not an FDA-approved product. The best way to ensure your hearing aid is legitimate is to seek guidance from a medical professional. Before purchasing over-the-counter hearing aids, keep the following in mind:%u2022 The FDA has not approved any over-the-counter hearing aids. Over-the-counter hearing aids are not regulated and may simply be PSAP, which may be of poor quality and not work for those with hearing loss.%u2022 Research the seller on the Better Business Bureau website or another objective consumer review site.%u2022 Consider getting a hearing screen and opinion from a hearing specialist who can tell you whether an over-the-counter hearing device will work for you.Remember, if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.Durable Medical Equipment Fraud %u2013 DME stands for durable medical equipment: things like back braces and wheelchairs. You may receive a back, knee, or arm brace in the mail that you never asked for. It may come with documentation that leads you to believe the brace was sent by your doctor. If you received a Medicare payment form, do not sign it. It is a scam, and if Medicare doesn't cover it, you will be charged.Contact the Attorney General's Office.
